Our own "Rosie the Riveter", more recently Our own excellent Artist!

Have you met Pauleene Smith? She lives on Outrigger Cove and has for nine years! Pauleene says "I have been very happy here in my little patio home". She recently added a nice screened room to the back so she could enjoy the outdoors more. Pauleene is originally from Corbin Kentucky. She spent many years as an educator, teaching children many things including self esteem and an appreciation for the creative process.

During World War II Pauleene traded teaching for riveting. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, Pauleene was just a teenager. "When they were calling for women to take jobs, my sister and I decided to go and do what we could for the country. We went to Louisville [KY] to work in a shipyard - my sister trained to become an electrician, and I became a welder"

As a welder she helped to build Landing Ship Tanks or LSTs for short.

Pauleene worked as a welder for 12 months on several LSTs and one day even climbing a flag pole to weld brackets on the top.

After her "riveting experience" Pauleene returned to teaching.

These days Pauleene has a new vocation as a successful local artist.

She has studied at the PJC Downtown center for several years. Her work is mainly in watermedia. Her work goes in all directions from from traditional portrait painting, through flowers and botanical still lifes, to collage and abstraction.

She is a frequent participant in portrait painting exercises at PJC and the Belmont Center, and enjoys working from live models. She is a member of the Pensacola Museum of Art. Memberships also include Gulf Breeze Arts, where she is often a winner in the member's show held in March of each year in conjunction with the Gulf Breeze Arts Festival. Last year she won best in show at the "Spring Fling" sponsored by Framing by Design.

If you don't see Pauleene around the neighborhood there's a good chance you'll find her at Blue Morning Gallery, a Coop art gallery of all local artists in many different mediums in Pensacola where she volunteers and displays her art.
